Background

Over the past year we have consulted with many homeowners seeking reliable and cost effective solutions for quality standby power.  Most of these homeowners we were able to help, but for some their goal was out of reach.  The difference between those we were able to help and those we were unable to help, was most often driven by the type of heating system – gas or electric.  With more and more homeowners demanding reliable power for home-office environments, medical issues, security concerns or just convenience, anticipating that standby generator power may be in a home’s future is a smart move that can save a homeowner thousands of dollars.

Understanding Energy Demand

A standby power generator is sized to meet the electric demand of the appliances connected to it.  The greater the demand, the larger the generator system required to meet that demand.   For example, the emergency (strip) heat function associated with an electric heat pump is typically 10kW (10,000 watts).   Since generators are intended to be operated at 80-85% of the rated capacity, the impact of an electric heat pump rules out the most popular and cost effective 12 and 15 kW standby power generators.    After considering the addition of the electric water heater (4,500 watts) and other electric requirements, the minimal generator size increases from 12 or 15kW to 25 or 30kW.   At $400 to $500 per kW, the cost of a quality generator system increases to more than $10,000.00 not including installation with the electric heat pump scenario.   In addition, maintenance and natural gas or propane fuel costs to power the generator increase substantially.

Understanding the electrical requirements of the major energy consuming appliances is the key to advance planning.

The Solution

If reliable cost effective standby power is an option that you would like to plan for, then limiting electric demand through the use of gas appliances for major energy uses such as heating and water heating should be considered.  When electric demand is limited, there is substantial capacity available with a 12 to 20kW generator for other appliances and conveniences that help you stay comfortable and secure under all weather conditions.
